On May 3rd, 2008, three adults and15 students braved the cold, windy day to complete our project of making West more visually appealing through pulling those annoying weeds, adding mulch around one of our 68 trees, picking-up litter from our 1,984 student body and pruning trees and bushes in one of three courtyards. Many of the students that participated on this day were virtual strangers with each other. Through this activity, I believe that students from our large high school were able to let their protective guard down to work together in creating a little pride from taking on such a large task.
Even though our attempt was noted, there was still a lot of work to be done around our large campus. Some students and adults were not willing to give up. In fact, some teachers took time from their classroom schedule to help us beautify West High School. Groups and classes of students have been working at least an hour a day to complete the work we set out to do. Please view some of our work:
Even with the contribution from the Modern Woodmen of America, we had to look elsewhere to further fund our project of purchasing mulch for our gorgeous trees. So some of our students approached their friends during lunchtime to ask for donations.
